Sebastian Dumitrescu: “Arrhythmia – looking for microtonal harmonies in a new work for keyboard and live electronics”
With “Arrhythmia – looking for microtonal harmonies in a new work for keyboard and live electronics”, a 31-tone piece for Fokker organ (or Lumatone keyboard) and interactive live electronics, Sebastian Dumitrescu attempts to move to the next level of understanding of the harmonic syntax he is researching in his doctoral studies: the computer, knowing in real time (through MIDI) which notes the live performer is playing, follows a dictionary of rules in order to produce notes that follow local models of the aforementioned harmonic syntax. The live performer reacts to what the computer is playing, and is in charge of the higher-level expression and form, producing a half-deterministic, statistical approach, a strings-attached system of harmony, a bunch of storytelling microtonal progressions. The composition of”Arrhythmia – looking for microtonal harmonies in a new work for keyboard and live electronics” has been supported by a grant from MES.
