Between Clouds and Fossils

Kalle Katailan teoksessa romantiikan maalauksia kaikuavat yöpilvet näyttäytyvät aikamme valokuvaan liittyvien teknologioiden käännetyssä järjestyksessä. 16mm elokuvaprojektorilla toteutettu teos herättää kysymyksiä kuinka nämä teknologiat medioivat kokemuksiamme maailmasta, pirstaloiden ajan ja paikan käsityksiämme. Teoksen lähtökohtana on kaukainen web-kamera, mikä tallentaa automaattisesti maiseman ja pilvien yöllisen näkymän, mutta onko tämä mekaanisen silmän tuottama näkymä maisema – tanssivatko pilvet siinä iloista tanssiaan ilman katsettamme?

Teemu Lehmusruusun teokset ovat sarja objekteja, jotka johdattelevat ajan ja muistamisen tarkasteluun. Ne herättävät kollektiivisesti opittuja mielikuvia maan ja eliökunnan historiasta, mutta ovat riittämättömiä tarjoamaan yhden luennan. Museaalisten esittämistapojen uudelleen käyttäminen, sekä luonnontieteellisen, hengellisen ja arkisen havaintomaailman yhteenkietoutuminen ovat teoksien keskeisiä elementtejä. Lehmusruusun taiteellisen työskentelyn olennaisena kysymyksenasetteluna on ihmisen tapa olla osana geologista ajanlaskua.

Kalle Kataila is presenting a 16mm film projection installation where by revers- ing and re-arranging technologies he is asking how those technologies medi- ate our experiences and in particular how our concepts of time and place are scattered by them. Kataila’s work takes its starting point in a live webcam feed that records the landscape and the nightly cloud formations that resemble 19th century romantic landscape paintings, but at anonymous moment is that view produced by mechanical eye a landscape – do the clouds dance without our perception of them?

Teemu Lehmusruusu works with installations that lead us to survey our con- cept of time and recollection. They evoke collectively learned images of earth’s and organisms history, but are inadequate to provide an unambiguous reading. The redoing of museum display conventions and the intertwinedness of natural scientific, spiritual and mundane experiences are central elements in his works. The essential interest in Lehmusruusu’s artistic practise is humans way of being part of geological history. As part of Lehmusruusu’s installation a sound work by Felicity Mangan is audible.
