VILLA ELÄINTARHA ARTIST RESIDENCY
Villa Eläintarha is an artist residency in a wooden villa in the centre of Helsinki, next to Töölönlahti bay, its operations are directed by Myymälä2. It is a charming home dedicated to cultural operators of all fields: performance art, visual arts, music, writing, curatorial practice, circus, media art, architecture, design, dance, theatre, all live arts. It has been operational since 2000, distinguishing itself as a low threshold place that savours the Finnish tradition of hospitality. It provided hundreds of local and international organisations and individuals with the opportunity to work in Helsinki, uplifting the cosy flavour of warm reception. The activity at the Villa supports the whole cultural sector giving priority to cultural production and grass root organisations.
Villa Eläintarha offers the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful green area in the heart of Helsinki. Located in Tokoinranta, near Töölönlahti bay, close to the main railway station, it is near the main theatres, libraries, museums and other amenities. The vicinity of the bay and a peaceful park around the villa ensure a pleasant and quiet living environment. The busy Hakaniemi marketplace with shops and versatile transport connections is located only a five-minute walk from the villa.
Villa Eläintarha offers the possibility of living in a museum-like mansion. The rooms are spacious and bright, and the house has been preserved as close as possible to the original design.
Myymälä2 actively connects the residents with other cultural professionals in Finland. Via our gallery programme rich with events, performance festivals, exhibitions, concerts, and readings, the residents can directly access the vibrant cultural life of the city.
