The sweaty grip that glues onto my palm
the racket
an extension of my arm
my bodily memory remembers it well
the ball in conversation with the blue sky
the strings vibrate
but stiff
The salty sweat drops falling into my eyes
forcing me to blink
twice
my filthy Adidas sweat band
comes to the rescue
The groan that the body generates
while hitting the ball hard
perfectly straight
they say I have a backhand like Venus Williams
An exhibition circling around competition, performance and unfulfilled dreams. Bead after bead, stitch after stitch I embroider memories of the sports world. The trophy embodies emotions, becomes a symbol of the winning body but also the wounded body and the struggling body. It becomes an extension of my body and actions, a symbol of perseverance and a testament of success. The net is important and works as a dividing line between front and behind, it gathers and collects. If it’s torned it looses its function and vitality. The net can form an empty ball bag and become a symbol of anticlimax and unfulfilled expectations. 15-0, 30-0, 40-0. The ball is out. Game. Set. Match.
Lotta Grimborg (b.1988) is a textile artist currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden. In her practice she explores the language of the sports world and the fabric’s inherent qualities and enclosed feminine references. Her main techniques are embroidery and bead embroidery which she explores through two dimensional works and three dimensional soft sculptures. Lotta received her MFA in Textile Art from the University of Gothenburg, HDK-VALAND in 2019 and her BFA in Fine Art from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm 2015. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally, but this is the first exhibition in Finland.
Näyttely käsittelee kilpailua, esittämistä ja toteutumattomia unelmia. Taiteilija kirjoo helmi helmen perään, ommel ompeleen perään esiin muistoja urheilumaailmasta. Pokaali ilmentää tunteita: siitä tulee symboli voittajan keholle, sekä haavoittuneelle ja kamppailevalle keholle. Siitä tulee kehon ja tekojen jatke, sinnikkyyden symboli ja todiste menestyksestä. Verkko on tärkeä elementti, joka toimii takana – ja edessä olevan jakajana, se kerää ja haalii. Jos se on repeytynyt, se menettää tarkoituksensa ja elinvoimansa. Verkko voi muodostaa tyhjän pallopussin ja tulla antikliimaksin ja täyttymättömien odotusten symboliksi. 15-0, 30-0, 40-0. Pallo on pelissä. Peli. Erä.Ottelu.
Lotta Grimborg (s.1988) on tekstiilitaiteilija, joka työskentelee tällä hetkellä Göteborgissa, Ruotsissa. Hänen praktiikkansa tutkii urheilumaailman kieltä ja kankaan luontaisia ominaisuuksia, sekä sen sisältämiä feminiinisiä viittauksia. Hänen päätekniikkansa ovat kirjonta ja helmi kirjonta, joita hän tutkii kaksiulotteisten teosten ja kolmiulotteisten pehmeiden veistosten kautta. Grimborg on valmistunut tekstiilitaiteen maisteriksi Göteborgin yliopistosta. HDK-VALAND:sta vuonna 2019 ja hänellä on Kuvataiteen BFA-tutkinto Konstfackin taideyliopistosta Tukholmassa, muotoilun ja käsityön linjalta. Hänen töitään on ollut esillä gallerioissa ja museoissa sekä paikallisesti että kansainvälisesti, mutta tämä on ensimmäinen näyttely Suomessa.
