Tasanko on paikka, jossa ihminen on ahneuksissaan viljellyt maaperän kuiviin, ja eroosio on muuttanut ennen viljavan maan hiekkaerämaaksi. Maanviljelijät ovat hylänneet hedelmättömät peltonsa ja siirtyneet viljelemään mustaa kultaa loputtomiin jatkuvilla öljykentillä.
Keski-ikäinen pariskunta asuu edelleen kaiken keskellä rappeutuneessa talossa. Hiljaisuuden rikkovat lähes päivittäin toistuvat pölymyrskyt, sekä ohi ajavat, valtavat rekat, jotka kuljettavat öljyä rannikkokaupunkeihin.
Pariskunnan tytär Olive, tai Ollie, työskentelee öljykentällä vanhan poraajan apumiehenä. Ollien tavoitteena on löytää salaperäinen sateentekijä, jonka avulla hän uskoo tuovansa helpotusta vuosia kestäneeseen kuivuuteen.
Näyttely esittelee tekeillä olevaan sarjakuvateoksen “Hiekka” maailman, kuivuuden ja pölymyrskyjen riivaaman nimettömän tasangon. Näyttelyssä on luettavissa kirjan luku, joka kertoo Ollien elämästä öljykentällä, sekä animoituja sarjakuvaruutuja, jotka esittelevät tarinan tapahtumapaikkaa ja tunnelmaa.
Näyttelyn äänimaailman on suunnitellut ja toteuttanut Niklas Meltio.
Tarinan käsikirjoittamista on edeltänyt laaja perehtyminen Keskilännen kuivuuskauteen ja öljyntuotantoon 1930-luvulla mm. aikalaisten kirjoittamien päiväkirjojen muodossa. Lähes vuosikymmenen kestänyt erityisen lämmin ja kuiva ajanjakso muutti 40 miljoonaa hehtaaria viljelymaata pölyäväksi hiekaksi. Sateet palasivat vuonna 1939, mutta kuivuus koettelee jälleen Keskilännen tasankoja. Viimeisen 20 vuoden aikana pölymyrskyt ovat jälleen yleistyneet ja
muuttuneet voimakkaammaksi, ja tutkijat varoittavat jo uudesta “Dust Bowlista”.
Animaatiot on toteutettu myös Augmented Reality -tekniikalla ja ovat katsottavissa mobiililaitteilla EyeJack -ohjelmalla.

Eeva Meltio (1977) on helsinkiläinen sarjakuvataiteilija ja graafikko. Hänen ensimmäinen sarjakuva-albuminsa Pedot julkaistiin 2015 Asema Kustannuksen toimesta. Kustantamo Editions Cambourakis julkaisi Pedot Ranskassa vuonna 2017 nimellä “Animaux”. Toinen sarjakuvateos “Hiekka” julkaistaan vuonna 2022.

In the 1930’s the farmers had in all their greed farmed the land to the point only drought remained. The erosion that followed deserted the land. The people eventually abandoned what used to be their fields and began searching for the black gold, oil.
A middle aged couple remained on their run down farm. The silence is occasionally broken by sand storms or semi trucks carrying oil to the coast.
The couple’s daughter Olive, or Ollie as they call her, works at the rig as a tooler. She aims to find the mysterious rainmaker whom she thinks will bring an end to the drought.
The exhibition presents a takeout from the graphic novel “Dust”. A story about Ollie and the god forsaken land that drives her to work at the oil fields. The chapter shows her life at the rig. The animations sets the scene and atmosphere for the story.
The soundscape is produced by Niklas Meltio.
The writing was preceded by extensive research about the Midwest drought and oil drilling in the 30’s. Diaries of the time reveals the hard times of daily life in the decade long struggle for survival. The drought turned 40 billion acres of farming land into dust. The rain eventually returned in 1939. Over the past 20 years the Midwest has again suffered from drought and the sand storms have become more frequent. Researchers are talking about a second Dust Bowl.

Eeva Meltio (1977) is a comic artist and graphic designer based in Helsinki. Meltio’s first novel “Animals” was published in 2015 by Asema publications. Later in 2017 Edition Cambourakis published the novel in France under the title “Animaux”. Her second graphic novel “Dust” will be published in 2022.
