When you Can’t Look Another in the Eye

Reminiscent of home, the exhibition, containing personal footage and stream of consciousness text explores the rift between the perceived, lived, dreamed and experienced worlds created by an online connection. Specifically dealing with times when more intimate moments are shared the video installations draw attention to the differences between mental perception and bodily experience that are entangled in these experiences and often brought to light the moment an online connection is severed – the benefits, limitations and depth of the virtual connection.
The viewer is asked to take a moment, to be confronted not only with the contents of the videos but also their related personal experiences. What kind of relationship can be had when you can’t look another in the eye?

Bio:
Dana Neilson is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation, photography, ceramics, and video art. Her work process is slow and intuitive, often guided by or scavenged from the environment she finds herself in. Betwixt curiosity and dissection she pulls apart different ideas and concepts searching for a deeper understanding of relationships, experience, influence and connection – more questions arise. She holds a MA from Aalto University, and BFA in Photography from Concordia University. Her work has been exhibited in Europe and North America.

Kotia muistuttava, henkilökohtaista kuvastoa ja ajatuksenvirta tekstiä sisältävä näyttely tutkii internetyhteyden synnyttämiä eroja havaittujen, elettyjen, unelmoitujen ja koettujen maailmojen välillä. Käsitellen erityisesti erityisesti aikaa, jolloin jaetaan intiimimpiä hetkiä, videoinstallaatio kiinnittää huomiota psyykkisen havainnon ja kehollisen kokemuksen välisiin eroihin, jotka ovat kietoutuneet näihin kokemuksiin ja jotka usein tuodaan esiin heti, kun verkkoyhteys katkeaa – virtuaalisen yhteyden edut, rajoitukset ja syvyys.
Katsojaa pyydetään pysähtymään hetkeksi ja kohtaamaan videoiden sisällön lisäksi myös asiaan liittyvät henkilökohtaiset kokemuksensa. Millainen suhde toiseen voi olla, kun ei pysty katsomaan silmiin?

Bio:
Dana Neilson on monialainen taiteilija ja työskentelee installaatioiden, valokuvauksen, keramiikan, sekä videotaiteen parissa. Hänen työprosessinsa on hidas ja intuitiivinen, usein ympäristön ohjaama tai siitä etsitty. Uteliaisuuden ja pohdiskelun välillä hän purkaa auki eri ideoita ja käsitteitä tavoitellen syvempää ymmärrystä ihmissuhteista, kokemuksista, vaikutuksista ja yhteyksistä – herää lisää kysymyksiä. Hänellä on maisterintutkinto Aalto-yliopistosta ja valokuvauksen BFA Concordia-yliopistosta. Hänen teoksiaan on ollut esillä Euroopassa ja Pohjois-Amerikassa.
