“Meri & Maippi Are Playing” – “I Want To See What I Look Like”

We started filming in October 2023 with the aim of capturing our everyday life as video-like as possible for our animated diary. Our shooting speed is 1 frame / 5 seconds using our bodies as animation puppets. Our play is very slow. Although the end result is close to a normal speed, during the shooting the world comes to a standstill. There is nothing more than a tiny little movement, every five seconds. It is possible to join our play, but it’s not compulsory. We live as roommates in Hämeenlinna and shoot both at our home and at random locations mainly in the Hämeenlinna area.
Animating your own body is meditative. We have to think carefully about the movements of the whole body, because the filming duration is so long that the natural movement is lost. Often when filming, limbs become numb and gravity feels like an almost insurmountable obstacle to the desired result. On the other hand, it is possible to plan the movement together, because the movement can be discussed as the shooting progresses. Because there is time. Often our planning beforehand is limited to the play equipment we use – otherwise we do what we feel like and the movement proceeds improvisationally. The citizens of a busy world slow down.

Myymälä2 is pleased to present “Meri & Maippi Are Playing” and “I Want To See What I Look Like” by Maippi Ketola & Meri Hietala. The exhibition is divided into two sections, The first “Meri & Maippi Are Playing” which consists of video documentation of a performative double act in which they have been engaged in exploring and tapping into the creative possibilities of outlandish play. Their short sketches are ludic vignettes executed with a very effective play-acting slapstick intention, their joyful frolics, gags and pranks are seasoned with a bit of naughty mischief. Looking at Maippi and Meri’s capering you might notice their predilection for suspending the climax and replacing it with an opportunist twist of logic. With their like-minded sisterhood wacky stunts and extroverted approach, they choose to sublimate the pursuit of a singular subjectivity using a paired shared endeavour. One can say that, their coming together in such spontaneous complicity is an outgrowth and uncommon friendship test that expresses a remarkable and solid collaborative practice.
The second part is “I Want To See What I Look Like” by Maippi Ketola in which she explores the peculiar archetypical image of herself as a bearded woman using the visual style of showbusiness oddity and circus mystifying imagery. In this exploration Ketola follows the trail of the complex iconography and historiography of women with facial hair such as Saint Wilgefortis, who in the 14th century disrupted the binaries of male/female, as well the duality of human and the divine; Annie Jones, a sideshow woman touring with the P. T. Barnum troupe in the United States and fictional characters as the bearded witches in ‘Macbeth’, and the witch of Brentford in “Merry Wives of Windsor”, looking in those histories it comes as conclusive that a woman with a beard is invariably unnatural and dangerous. In this context, Ketola provides us with a queer, ambiguous, and somehow intricate embodiment which withstands against body image normativity and imposes itself as a resilient, subversive and intentionally defiant entity.

In my exhibition at Myymälä2, I want to come out of the closet as a woman with a beard. For me, the subject has been a very painful one and I know even the kind of self-destructive feelings that go through the mind of a woman struggling with this subject. But there are many more of us than the overlook might suggest. We shave our faces so well you can’t tell us apart. But our thoughts, our movements, the way we pose for photographs and generally for other people, our secret shaving moments in the toilet stalls… we share. Us hairy women. In silence.
I’ll be growing my beard for 55 days at the Saari residence in between September and October 2024. Not yet, I mean. Myymälä2’s exhibition consists of two elements. Large-scale sideshow posters I have painted of myself and a video documentary of my daily shaving.

Artist Bios:
Maippi Ketola is a visual artist based in Hämeenlinna. She has made animation, experimental live animation, painting, installation, performance, comics, video, textile works, dioramas and co-funded post-apocalyptic religion with Harri Vähänissi. Her works have been seen both in Finland and internationally in several solo and group exhibitions.
Meri Hietala is an multidisciplinary artist, working internationally on performance, sound and environmental art. They have performed in R.A.W. Myymälä2 Helsinki 2022, V.I.P.A.W. performance art festival in Venice 2017 and On the Cusp performance art festival in Bangarra Dance Theater Sydney 2015. At the moment she lives and works in Hämeenlinna.

Olemme aloittaneet kuvaukset lokakuussa 2023. Tarkoituksenamme on kuvata mahdollisimman videokuvan kaltaista kuvaa arjestamme animaatiopäiväkirjaamme. Kuvausnopeutemme on 1 kuva / 5 sekuntia käyttäen kehojamme animaationukkeina. Leikkimme on hyvin hidas. Vaikka lopputulos on lähellä normaalia nopeutta, kuvaustilanteessa maailma pysähtyy. Ei ole mitään muuta kuin pienen pieni liike, viiden sekunnin välein. Leikkiimme saa liittyä, muttei ole pakko. Asumme kämppiksinä Hämeenlinnassa ja kuvaamme sekä kotonamme, että satunnaisissa paikoissa lähinnä Hämeenlinnan alueella.
Oman kehon animoiminen on meditatiivista. Joudumme miettimään tarkkaan koko kehon liikkeitä, koska kuvaustilanne on niin pitkä, että luonnollinen liike häviää. Usein kuvatessa paikat puutuvat ja painovoima tuntuu kehossa lähes ylitsepääsemättömänä esteenä halutun lopputuloksen edessä. Toisaalta liike on mahdollista suunnitella yhdessä, koska liikkeestä voi käydä pitkiäkin keskusteluja kuvauksen edetessä. Koska aikaa on. Usein etukäteen suunnittelumme rajoittuu vain käytettäviin leikkivälineisiin – muuten teemme mitä mieli tekee ja liike etenee improvisoiden. Kiireisen maailman kansalaiset hidastavat.

Myymälä2:ssa nähdään Maippi Ketolan & Meri Hietalan “Meri & Maippi leikkii” ja “Haluan nähdä miltä näytän”. Näyttely on jaettu kahteen osaan: Ensimmäinen osa, “Meri & Maippi leikkivät” koostuu videodokumentaatiosta performatiivisesta kaksoisnäytöksestä, jossa he ovat tutkineet kummallisten leikkien luovia mahdollisuuksia. Heidän luonnoksensa ovat lyhyitä, lyydisiä kuvauksia, jotka on toteutettu tehokkaalla ja leikinomaisella slapstick-otteella. Riemukkaat kepposet, pelleilyt ja pilat on maustettu hieman tuhmalla ilkikurisuudella. Maippin ja Merin temppuilua katsellessa saattaa kiinnittää huomiota heille ominaiseen taipumukseen lopettaa tapahtuman huipentuma kesken kaiken ja korvata se opportunistisella, loogisella käänteellä. Ulospäin suuntautuneella lähestymistavallaan he muovaavat omasta yksilöllisestä työskentelystään yhteisen kokonaisuuden sisaruudella ja hullunkurisilla tempauksilla. Voisi sanoa, että se kuinka he toiminnassaan kohtaavat spontaanisti on harvinainen ystävyyskoe, joka osoittaa merkittävästä ja vahvasta yhteistyöstä.
Toisessa osassa näyttelyä Maippi Ketolan teoksessa “Haluan nähdä, miltä näytän” hän tutkii omituista arkkityyppillistä kuvaa itsestään parrakkaana naisena hyödyntäen showbisneksen kummallista visuaalista kuvastoa ja sirkuksen mystistä ilmettä. Tutkimuksessaan Ketola seuraa kasvojen karvoituksen omaavien naisten kompleksia ikonografiaa ja historiankirjoitusta. Kuten Saint Wilgefortis, joka rikkoi 1300 -luvulla perinteisten sukupuolten binäärisyyttä ja ihmisen ja jumalan kaksijakoisuutta: tai Annie Jones, sivusirkusnainen joka kiersi P.T Barnumin seurueessa Yhdysvalloissa, Macbethin parrakkaat noidat sekä muut fiktiiviset hahmot sekä Brentfordin noidat esityksessä “Merry Wives of Windsor”. Näiden historiankirjoitusten perusteella voidaan päästä yhteisymmärrykseen siitä että parrakkaat naiset on aina nähty epäluonnollisena ja vaarallisena. Tässä yhteydessä Ketola tarjoilee meille queerin, monitulkintaisen ja jollain tavalla jopa monimutkaisen ruumiillistuman, joka vastustaa kehonkuvan normatiivisuutta ja asettuu sitkeäksi, vallankumoukselliseksi ja tarkoituksellisen uhmakkaaksi kokonaisuudeksi.

Haluan näyttelyssä Myymälä2:ssa tulla kaapista parrakkaana naisena. Minulle aihe on ollut hyvinkin kipeä ja tiedän minkälaisia jopa itsetuhoisia tuntemuksia kyseisen aiheen parissa kamppailevan naisen päässä liikkuu. Mutta meitä on paljon enemmän kuin katukuvasta saattaisi päätellä. Me sheivaamme naamamme niin hyvin ettei meitä erota. Mutta meidän ajatuksemme, liikkeemme, tapamme poseerata valokuvissa ja yleisesti muille ihmisille, salaiset sheivaushetkemme vessakopeissa… ne me jaamme. Me karvaiset naiset. Kaikessa hiljaisuudessa.
Tulen kasvattamaan partaani 55 päivän ajan Saaren kartanon residenssissä syys-lokakuussa 2024. En siis vielä. Myymälä2:n näyttely koostuu kahdesta elementistä. Suurikokoisista sideshow-julisteista, joita olen maalannut itsestäni sekä videodokumentaatiosta päivittäisestä parranajosta.

Taiteilijat:
Maippi Ketola on Hämeenlinnassa asuva kuvataiteilija. Hän on tehnyt niin animaatiota että kokeellista live-animaatiota, maalausta, installaatiota, performanssia, sarjakuvaa, videota, tekstiiliteoksia, dioraamoja ja perustanut yhdessä Harri Vähänissin kanssa post-apokalyptisen uskonnon. Hänen teoksiaan on nähty sekä Suomessa että kansainvälisesti useissa yksityis- ja ryhmänäyttelyissä.
Meri Hietala on monialainen taiteilija, joka työskentelee kansainvälisesti performanssin, äänen ja ympäristötaiteen parissa. He ovat esiintyneet R.A.W. Myymälä2:ssa Helsingissä 2022, V.I.P.A.W. performanssitaidefestivaalilla Venetsiassa 2017 ja On the Cusp performanssitaidefestivaalilla Bangarra Dance teatterissa Sydneyssä 2015. Tällä hetkellä hän asuu ja työskentelee Hämeenlinnassa.
